Some weeks ask a lot of us (especially weeks like this one). A difficult conversation stays with you after the call ends. Plans change. Your phone keeps lighting up, and even when the appointments are over, your mind is still working through the day.
Before you carry all of that into the weekend, give yourself a little room to settle.
The NHS recommends movement, connection, time for yourself, and focusing on what you can influence as practical ways to manage stress. Those ideas fit into a real estate workweek in small, useful ways.
Choose one or two items below that feel right for today. If your weekend includes showings or an open house, a break between appointments counts, too.
On Your Own
Give yourself a little breathing room
- Take five quiet minutes. Sit comfortably with your feet supported. Let your breathing find a gentle, regular rhythm without forcing a deep breath. The NHS breathing exercise offers a simple guide you can return to whenever you need a pause.
- Move in a way that feels good. Take a short walk, stretch, or step outside and enjoy a change of scenery. Choose a pace and activity that are comfortable for you. Give the phone a rest while you do it.
- Leave yourself a note for next time. Write down what is still open, the next action, and when it needs attention. Handle anything time-sensitive, then put the list somewhere you can find it when you return.
- Make a little space away from the phone. Choose a window to mute nonessential alerts. If a transaction needs coverage, arrange it or keep the necessary contact available so you can take the break with fewer loose ends.
- Do something you enjoy just because you enjoy it. Read a chapter, tend a plant, listen to music, cook something simple, or sit outside with a favorite drink. Give that small pleasure a place in the day.
With Other Realtors
Spend a little time supporting each other
- Invite someone for a walk or an unhurried lunch. Ask how they are doing. Leave room for conversation about family, a hobby, or something they are looking forward to.
- Ask what kind of support would help. Before getting into a tough week, try, “Would you like me to listen, or would it help to think through it together?” Keeping client details private.
- Give the debrief a gentle ending. If you talk through a challenge, identify any follow-up worth keeping, then change the subject or take a walk. You can return to the issue when it needs attention.
- Notice something that went well. Share a moment you appreciated: a colleague's help, a kind message, or a difficult task you finished. Let someone know if they made your week easier.
With Your Clients
Make room for a more comfortable pace
- Offer a choice of setting. Ask whether they would prefer to sit down, take a short walk, or reconnect by phone at a quieter time. Let their preference guide you.
- Make a pause feel welcome. After a busy round of showings or a long discussion, offer a few minutes to sit, have some water, or collect their thoughts. A quiet moment does not need to be filled.
- Put the loose ends in one place. Write down the remaining questions together, who will get each answer, and when you will reconnect. Keep it short enough to be useful at a glance.
- Give them room to reflect. Explain any real deadlines, then offer whatever thinking time the situation allows. Ask whether they would like a moment to talk privately or review the information on their own.
Offer these as choices. Follow the client's lead about what feels helpful and how much they want to share.
Let the Week Have an Ending
Before you close the laptop or head home, ask yourself: “What needs my attention now, and what can wait until the time I've set aside?”
Take care of the first. Give the second a place on your list. Then choose one small thing that helps you settle into the rest of your day.
You have spent the week making room for other people's needs. Leave a little room for your own.
From all of us at Dream House Virginia, we hope you find a moment to rest, reconnect, and enjoy the weekend.
For context, the Federal Reserve raised its policy-rate target this week—a rate that differs from the mortgage rate quoted to an individual borrower. However, the move brings market uncertainty about what comes next.
